Even though it sometimes takes a bit of effort to get the sheets off, wash them, and put them back on, we're pretty sure there's a broad consensus on how wonderful it feels to have freshly laundered sheets. In other words, there's almost nothing better than the prospect of sleeping in fresh, clean sheets.

But how often do you actually change your bed linen? And do you know how to wash it to maintain its quality for as long as possible? In this post, we answer the most common questions about washing bed linen, so you never have to be in doubt in the future.

How often should bed linen be changed?

There are no clear rules for how often you should change your bed linen. The rule of thumb is about every 2 to 4 weeks, so you can find somewhere in between that works for you.

Maybe you spill a cup of coffee in bed or fall asleep on your pillow with mascara on, and that often leads to a wash. But there is also a lot of dirt that is not immediately visible to the naked eye. If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense – sweat, hair, dead skin cells and dust mites come into contact with your bedding every day, and of course, it should not sit in the textiles for too long.

At what temperature should bed linen be washed?

Bedding is available in a wide range of materials, and some are more delicate than others. Therefore, it also depends on your bedding, how many degrees you can wash it at. As a general rule, you should always follow the washing instructions, but if you have bedding that can withstand it, you can wash it at 60 degrees, so you are sure that all bacteria disappear.

Do you have one of the beautiful silk bedding sets? We recommend that you hand wash in lukewarm water or at 30 degrees in the machine on a silk or gentle program. Silk is often more resistant to bacteria, and therefore does not require washing at higher temperatures.

However, silk is still a very delicate material, and you should therefore use a detergent intended for silk, wash the bedding inside out and air dry it afterwards.

How do you wash bed linen?

  1. If you spilled a cup of coffee or had a nosebleed, soak the stains in some stain remover before starting a regular wash.
  2. You can wash both the bedding and the sheet at the same time – as long as they are the same shade. Avoid using fabric softener as it is bad for your bedding.
  3. Be sure to check the washing instructions to make sure you are using the right temperature. Most bed linen can be washed at 60 degrees.

Drying. The best solution is definitely to hang the bedding outdoors so it can be aired out and has a fresh scent. Many people also choose to dry the bedding in the dryer, tossing it around well so it becomes soft and nice.
